Annie Dwyer

Dance and Somatics Educator

My lineage is tied to William Evans and his ability to weave together these two perspectives on movement. I spent at least 8 summers with Bill in Port Townsend, WA. and Brockport, NY exploring this work in the context of his unique point of view. I am a Certified Evans Technique teacher and I use his principles in my teaching to enhance awareness of movement in body, effort, shape and space. This way of working has been relevant to Moving Through in exploring the role that improvisation and dance can play in sustaining mental and physical health in individuals living with Parkinson’s. Props were introduced because as a creative movement teacher I have felt that the prop can give a visual experience of the concept and can suggest alternative ways of moving or visiting spaces we do not normally explore. A prop can become another link into imagery and understanding the body and movement from a different perspective. *For a brief, clear explanation of Laban Movement Analysis and space reference Appendix A in Making Connections: Total Body integration Through Bartenieff Fundamentals by Peggy Hackney
